Should I be losing weight?

Q: I've lost five pounds and three inches off my tummy while I'm pregnant, and I'm 27 weeks along. Should i be worried????

A: Weight loss in a pregnancy is completely normal for women who are not at their ideal body weight when they start the pregnancy. I always explained it to my patients this way: Women put on fat stores to allow the baby to have a constant source of "food." However, if the stores are already there, then imagine your growing baby as a little internal personal trainer who is drawing off your food stores and, effectively, making you lose them. Women who are losing weight because of excessive vomiting (hyperemesis), however, may be at risk of lacking proper nutrition, and should discuss the weight loss with their OB.
