Are soreness and tingling in your hands and feet normal during pregnancy?

Q: I am 38 weeks pregnant. I feel soreness and tingling in both my hands and feet. What could be causing it?

A: Numbness in the hands and feet can be caused be fluid retention in pregnancy.  Carpal Tunnel of pregnancy (a temporary compression of the nerves that innervate the hands) can be relieved with wrist splints worn during sleep and the daytime as needed.  These conditions usually subside 4-6 weeks after delivery.  Any numbness or tingling that is associated with other symptoms (visual changes, gait changes, dropping objects, etc) should be discussed with your doctor.
