Where do contractions begin?

Q: Can you have contractions that start in the lower back?

A: Contractions can begin in the lower back, and they may be false or real contractions. Most of the time, lower back pain during pregnancy is related to skeletal changes that occur from a hormone, called relaxin, that is secreted towards the later half of pregnancy. True contractions usually start high up on your back.  They then circle around and down.  It may feel like someone squeezing you around the ribs down to your pelvis.
