Is it okay to have intercourse after having a C section?

Q: I had a C section two weeks ago. Is it okay to have intercourse with my husband?

A: Intercourse is not recommended for at least 6 weeks after either a vaginal delivery or a C-section. Women who have had complications during or after delivery, may have to wait for up to 8 to 10 weeks in some cases. It is important to let all of the tissue heal, and even though you didn't have a vaginal delivery, you did just have major surgery. It's best to wait the full 6 weeks and check with your practitioner before restarting sexual activity so he or she can give you the okay and discuss birth control options.
