What should I use to support my baby's head in the car seat?

Q: What should I use to support my 1 year old's head when she falls asleep in the car seat? Her head keeps going in a tilted position. We think this is not comfortable for her neck and could use some support. The body pillow supports a maximum of 22 pounds.  Any good product recommendations?

A: Any product placed near or around your child in a car seat, that was not placed there by the manufacturer, could affect the car seat's ability to protect your child in the event of a crash. There are numerous products on the market and I have seen parents use blankets and stuffed animals, but there are none that I am aware of that are reccomended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The safest thing is to make sure your child's car seat is rear facing, up until she is the age of two. Falling asleep while the car seat is rear facing will keep the head and neck from tilting forward, and it may be more comfortable.
