Which baby formula should I use?

Q: What kind of formula should I use to feed my baby?

A: Most babies do very well on basic, classic formulas from companies like Similac, Enfamil, and Nestle. Over the last several years, these companies have released advanced versions of their basic formulas fortified with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid), fatty acids found naturally in breast milk that have been shown to help boost babies' brain development. Since these nutrients tend to be lacking in the diets of babies fed with regular formula, many pediatricians recommend going for the supplemented version if you can.

If your baby has any special digestive needs, like milk allergies or lactose intolerance, you'll need to give her formula specifically designed for babies with her digestive issues. Your pediatrician can help you select one that's right for your infant.

It's important to remember that the government closely regulates the nutrition in all infant formulas, and it's perfectly fine to choose a generic brand (if you compare labels, you'll find that the ingredients may be exactly the same). There's also no real nutritional difference between powdered and liquid formulas. Powdered is cheaper -- and can be toted in a diaper bag without refrigeration -- but you do need to mix it up yourself. (Although this only takes a few minutes, it can feel a lot longer with a hungry, screamy baby in the background.)

  1. My baby never slept well (especially through the night) until I started using the website >>SleepBaby .org<< - that website has been by far one of the best things I've ever got my hands on to get him to fall asleep quickly. Best time is 45 seconds from awake to asleep! Can’t imagine life without it! I heard about it through a kindergarten teacher who uses it to put to sleep a group of 30 children. Check it out! >>SleepBaby .org<< - sorry, you can't post links here so you'll have to turn it into a normal link :) Best of luck to you and your family!
