How to Make a Dinosaur-Egg Cake
If your child loves T-Rex and Stegosaurus, get prehistoric with a dinosaur-egg shaped cake.
Get prehistoric for your child's birthday party with this Neon Dinosaur Egg Cake. You'll need a box of yellow cake mix, vanilla frosting, neon food coloring, circus peanuts, banana-shaped heart candies, unsweetened coco powder and assorted round candies. First, you'll need to bake your cakes. Spoon 2 1/2 cups of the batter into 1 quart Pyrex bowl, 2 cups of the batter into a 1 quart measuring cup and the remaining one cup batter into a smaller one cup measuring cup. Bake according to package directions. Tint the vanilla frosting neon green with the food coloring. Trim the top of the cooled cakes with a serrated knife to make them level. Spread some of the green frosting on the trim side of the bowl cake. Place the four cupcake trim side down on top. Spread some of the frosting on top and add the remaining cake trim the side down pressing to secure. Insert a straw down the center of the cake for support. Use a serrated knife to trim and create the egg shape. Place the cake in the freezer for about 30 minutes to firm up. Spread the remaining neon green frosting all over the cake. Let the cake stand for about 15 minutes at room temperature. To create the dinosaur talons insert one end of the banana candy into the wide end of one of the circus peanuts. Repeat with the remaining candies and circus peanuts to make 6 talons. Lightly press a clean kitchen towel against the cake to make the texture and smooth any ridges. Dip the tip of a pastry brush in a coco powder dissolve in 2 tablespoons of warm water and run a skewer over the bristle tips to lightly spray the cake with speckles. Press the round candies all over the cake as the spots. Arrange 3 of the circus peanut talons together at the base of the cake. Repeat with the remaining circus peanuts about 3 inches away at the base of the cake to look like the clawed feet. You'll be sure to have a lot of fun with this cake.
