Pregnancy Skin Problems: Stretch Marks
We offer advice for preventing and treating this common pregnancy skin condition.
Stretch marks, the biggest fear of every pregnant woman. If your mother had them, you're likely to get them also. So what can you do if anything to prevent them? Well, the first thing is to moisturize your skin a lot. Well-moisturized skin is going to be less likely to tear because the elastic fibers are more resilient. So moisturize your breasts, your belly, your hips and your back side every day. Look for the ingredients Shea butter, avocado oil, wheat germ oil, coconut oil, basically any essential oil works really well. Another thing you can do to prevent stretch marks, and I think it's something that's really overlooked but very important; gain weight slowly and steadily. A rapid weight gain is gonna make it more likely for the elastic fibers to tear causing a stretch mark. So what can you do to treat them if you do unfortunately get them? When the stretch marks start, they're purple and red and this is the best time to treat them. We can use a topical retinoid like Retin-A if you're not breastfeeding, and we can also use the lasers KTP and pulsed dye laser to get out some of the redness. Once the stretch marks are old, they usually turn white or silvery and have kind of a wrinkled appearance. It's much harder to treat these and I'll be honest with you. I don't think there's any laser out there that's great yet, but I'm hoping. And if you do have stretch marks, at least know that they're in places that not too many people see. They're gonna probably fade with time and become less apparent to even you, and you do have a beautiful baby to show for your hard work.
