Shortness of Breath, 3D Animation
This video shows a child with shortness of breath/breathing difficulties. Learn the most common clinical signs of breathing difficulties such as rapid and labored breathing, retractions and flared nostrils.
This girl shows signs of shortness of breath. She is breathing more quickly than usual and appears out of breath. Look how the skin under and between the ribs is pulled or sucked in with each breath. This is what we call retractions, which are a sign that she needs to use extra breathing muscles to help move air in and out of the lungs. Here you can see retractions in the neck. This girl also uses nasal flaring to breathe more easily. Notice that her nostrils seem to spread wider when breathing in. This is also a sign of shortness of breath.
