Stop Toddler Bedtime Battles

Do You Just Have a Night Owl?

Q. My 2-year-old is always energized at bedtime, but he sleeps soundly in the morning. Is it possible that he's simply a night owl?

A. Maybe, but looks can be deceiving. If your child acts hyper when the sun sets, chances are he's overtired, says Parents advisor Ari Brown, MD, author of Toddler 411. When kids are exhausted, they tend to speed up and go wild, so try to put your child to bed before that happens.

That said, some kids are naturally night owls, so your son could be one of them. It's not a problem -- unless he has to get up early for daycare. If so, you'll have to tuck him in earlier than he'd like. Try shifting his naptime from mid- to early afternoon so he'll be sleepy enough to go to bed on time.
