Taking kids to the dentist is necessary to keep their teeth healthy and promote excellent oral hygiene habits. But from a child's point of view, a trip to the dentist can be a scary event -- lying on a chair in an unfamiliar room filled with unfamiliar noises and objects, all while a stranger is poking cold, metallic, and unusual instruments in his mouth. Plus, as your child's teeth continue to fall out and grow, he may take at least 10 trips to the dentist before starting kindergarten. To help ease future visits for your child (and for the dentist!), follow these steps so that he will feel comfortable and more relaxed.

@tbright10- for exams parents should come back but depending on your child, it can be best to not have the parent in the room. I would go to a pediatric dentist as well (find a good one in your area by going to www.aapd.org or a board certified pediatric dentist at www.abpd.org)..they have 2-3 years of additional training in pediatrics and will know best what your child will need..whether it be having parent present or not. Some parents can hinder treatment, whereas some can be very helpful.
2/20/2012 03:16:09 PM Report AbuseGreat article! My husband is a pediatric dentist and he agrees whole heartedly! It is so important to start children going to the dentist by the time the first tooth erupts or by their first bday. That way you can start prevention early and get them used to prevention visits as opposed to having their first visit be for dental treatment.
2/20/2012 03:10:28 PM Report AbuseI think its a good idea but most dentists dont allow parents to go into the room with them and i think this policy needs to change!
2/13/2012 02:07:55 PM Report AbuseJust be glad you don't have to put your kid under every time, like I do! ;) (I have a special needs child.)
2/13/2012 01:51:33 PM Report AbuseMy son did not fear the first visit. He loves to go in and have the "duck lips" when the Hygenist puts the fluoride treatment on. He loves to use the suction to help keep the stuff from being swallowed too. But this is the same person we've gone to for years and saw him as a baby and has watched him grow over the past 6 years. He is comfortable with her.
