When you hear: "Let's goooo!"
You hit the supermarket to pick up a few things, and your toddler starts whining to go home before you're halfway down Aisle 1.
The fix: Go over your good-behavior guidelines before you reach the store, says Jenn Berman, PsyD, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy, Confident Kids. If your child complains anyway, calm him down by being empathetic ("I know. I don't like long lines, either"). Try playing games to make the time go by faster: Ask him to point out all the yellow things in your cart, or play "I spy."
If your child's whining escalates to a tantrum, head to a quiet corner so he can relax. But if there's no soothing him, you may have to cut your losses and leave.
