10 Things Your Teen Son Won't Tell You...but He Did Tell Me
What's behind your son's mood swings, rebellions, and silences, from a father of two teens boys, and a former teen himself.
Somewhere after Little League and before high school graduation, your teenage son will become an enigma. You'll be in for a roller-coaster ride on his waves of moodiness, confounded by new habits, and sometimes dumbfounded by his choices. Don't worry: It's all pretty much normal. As a father who has survived two teen boys and a former teen myself, let me share the 10 secrets of the male teen mind -- for your peace of mind.
Your teen son isn't abnormal or obsessed more about sex than any other fella. Boys at this age have an overdeveloped hypothalamus, which is the part of the brain that triggers sexual behavior. And junior high is about the time when a big rush of testosterone hits, and your teen son will be riding that wave for the next few years. In fact, his testosterone level will be about 20 times the amount in girls the same age -- which is what causes his voice to drop and hair to pop up in all kind of places.
Talking with your son and sharing stories about your own awkward transitions can help him feel like all these changes -- and the sex thoughts -- are okay.
