Wheel of Life thanka (hanging scroll), mid-twentieth century, Unknown artist, Tibet. From the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The... Wheel of Life is commonly seen on the entrance walls of monasteries and on painted scrolls and woodblock prints throughout Tibet and the other Buddhist countries of the Himalayan region. In graphic form, accessible to everyone including those who cannot read, it illustrates the essence of Buddhist teachings, the Four Truths: the existence of earthly suffering, its origin and cause, the ending or prevention of misery and the practical path to liberation from suffering. Picture by picture, the Wheel reminds us that everyone is responsible for his or her own fate because, according to karma, causes and their effects are the fruits of one's own deeds. Jigsaw puzzle featuring Detroit Industry, North Wall (detail), 1932-1933, mural by Diego Rivera (Mexican, 1886-1957). Published wi...th the Detroit Institute of Arts. After years of rubbing elbows with the artistic avant-garde of Montparnasse, Diego Rivera (1886-1957) returned to Mexico soon after a very different encounter with the Renaissance masters Giotto and Michelangelo. His commitment to Mexico's recently completed revolution and his new interest in fresco painting led Rivera to participate in a program of public works, murals on broad expanses of wall that anyone could visit, painted in a straightforward style indebted to pre-Columbian and folk art.Later, a mural painted for San Francisco's Pacific Stock Exchange attracted the attention of the Detroit Institute of Arts, which commissioned him to paint the walls of its classical Garden Court. His theme, the manufacture of automobiles through human labor, pleased Edsel Ford, the president of the Ford Motor Company, who agreed to fund the project and became a great champion of the artist. The vast factory Ford built on the Rouge River, where Rivera spent days sketching, provided the images for the mural's largest panels, including the one shown here.Assembled puzzle measures 20 x 29. The Embrace, by Robert John Bissell (British born American, August 15, 1952).The bears in Robert Bissell's universe lead lives as ...seemingly complex and thought-filled as those led by humans. They are sometimes playful, sometimes contemplative and lost in a world known only to them. Whatever the activity, Bissell's delightful bears draw us into their world and invite a closer look. Here, a group of six bears-most standing upright, all peering upward-are surrounded by swirling clouds of blue butterflies. Are the bears idly curious? Pondering the mysteries of nature? They're too spellbound to tell us.Although the English-born Bissell started out surrounded by animals on his childhood farm, he did not start out a painter. After studying photography in London and later moving to America, he spent a decade in the corporate world before starting his own catalog company. Soon, however, he decided to follow his heart and create art full-time. He now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and is represented by galleries in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, Oregon, and Virginia, as well as a gallery in France.Assembled Size: 20 x 29 Read More
