Mavic
$159.95 $127.96 at Backcountry

Mavic's one of the few companies that makes road and mountain bike gear, so it's only logical that the Plasma Bike Helmet was desi...gned to handle both disciplines with making you look like a goober in either one. It has an aero-inspired look--it even has a spoiler-type deal on the back--that's perfect for the road, but more rear coverage that's in line with mountain-bike helmet norms. Mavic designed the Plasma with its Ergo Protec Alutex construction, which allows for the inclusion of ginormous front vents without sacrificing protection, and hooked it up with a removable visor so you can fine tune style and sun protection. The company also engineered in an Ergo Hold Retention one-handed fit-adjustment system (apparently it likes to preface everything it does with "ergo"), and lined the Plasma with moisture-wicking Ergo Fit Pro Pads to keep your head cool, dry, and comfortable. Reflective details finish the helmet off and help you make it home safely when your road ride takes you into the twilight. Read More

The Mavic Cosmic Ultimate Helmet isn't a road bike helmet or a mountain bike helmet; it's both. Mavic's designers took a completel...y new approach to helmet design to create a helmet that not only tackles both disciplines, but outperforms most sport-specific helmets with light weight, superior protection, and a style all its own.More important than versatility however, is comfort. First, Mavic looked at optimizing the shape of the helmet. It conducted cranial mapping tests to make certain that the Cosmic Ultimate closely matches typical head shapes. Additionally, Mavic identified the not-so-obvious pressure points and contours, and made the interior shape of the helmet consequently flow along with the curves of the skull. But, even with a mound of data, there were still variances. This is where Mavic's Ergo Hold SL System comes into play. Like the previous model, it allows for as much as six centimeters of one-handed, on-the-fly size adjustment. The SL (Super Light) model is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, however. For the final touches on fit perfection, as well as excellent moisture management, Mavic also included its Ergo Fit Pro Pad. At first glance, it might not seem like much, but the Ergo Fit Pro Pad is a low density, open cell foam that wicks water away from the skin and transports it to where it can quickly evaporate. After guaranteeing comfort, Mavic took a hard look at the aerodynamic and durability aspects of the exterior. First, Mavic fashioned a sleek, low-volume profile. Then, looking towards ventilation, Mavic gave the Cosmic Ultimate 26 Clima Vents to keep your head cool. So, not only are you riding cool and protected, but the aggressive shape enhances your aerodynamic position. Read More

Bell
$399.95 $279.96 at Backcountry

Bell's Full-9 helmet packages all its engineers' expertise from motosports into a bike-specific helmet. They also gathered a year'...s worth of feedback from professional downhill riders to make this their flagship bike helmet. Ready to take on anything you'll find on your mountain or BMX bike, the Full-9 is one of the best full-face helmets money can buy. Bell's engineers built the shell of the Full-9 with unidirectional carbon, Kevlar, and a fiberglass blend. This makes for a highly durable and incredibly lightweight helmet that doesn't weigh you down like other full-face helmets. The Overbrow Ventilation system uses 10 vents to actively channel air over your head from the front to back to keep you cool as you ride. Bell packed the Full-9 with features to keep you safe and to enhance your overall riding experience. The helmet's removable camera mount seamlessly connects your favorite GoPro or Contour camera to the best spot on the helmet. It's a removable, 360-degree breakaway mount that allows your camera to pop off when you fall in any direction--protecting your neck, camera, and the helmet itself. If you are injured, you can use Bell's Eject System, which allows safe removal of the helmet due to a recess in the EPS that allows the cheek pads to quickly slide out. To make your ride more enjoyable, Bell added Soundtrax--built-in speaker pockets and cable routing out the back of the helmet so you can pump tunes without getting tangled up.The helmet weighs around 1050 grams and is certified to CPSC; ASTM BMX, Downhill, and CE standards. Finishing touches include a padded chin strap with a D-ring closure, a fully-adjustable Flying Bridge visor, and integrated roost guard. Read More

The stylish low-profile design of Giro's Sutton MIPS Helmet is perfect for urban cyclists and dirt jumpers who want to look on-poi...nt, but also demand high-tech protection. The Sutton features Giro's Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS), which gives you superior protection by reducing rotational forces when the helmet gets hit at an angle. This makes the Sutton MIPS far safer than most helmets that only protect against direct impact. The Sutton is built with a polystyrene liner and uses an in-molded polycarbonate shell for added strength and weight savings. The Sutton has eight vents to keep your head cool, and is lighter than most ABS-shelled helmets of this style. The integrated light clip at the back allows you to attach your light to the helmet for added visibility, and a reinforced vent port lets you lock the helmet to your bike. Giro also includes a removable soft visor, and has designed the Sutton to used with Giro's line of goggles. Read More

Giro
$274.95 $206.21 at Backcountry

When Giro looked to up its aero game, it didn't just paste new stickers onto its Advantage helmet. It looked at the data and redes...igned it to create the Giro Selector. This helmet is now a standard in the professional peloton and should be a part of your aero kit as well. Giro used wind tunnel testing to sculpt a shape that works with your position on the bike to lessen the drag coefficient. On the front end, you'll notice the eye shield. Not only does this minimize tear-inducing wind in your eyes, it also smooths the leading surface so that the air moves over it faster. An added benefit is that the shield also acts to block out excess wind noise. Two vents help direct the air through the helmet and out the back vents to cool your head. For those who prefer sunglasses, however, the shield is removable. On the other end, the tail of the Selector helmet is closed on the underside and comes in two lengths, 10mm and 45mm. Each is designed to work with your body position and the choice depends on how low your shoulders and arms are. The helmet should sit low and close to your back when you are in an aero position. To secure the Selector, Giro uses the Roc Loc TT system. Different from the older Roc Loc 5 system, the TT uses a spring leaf system to apply even tension to the front and back of your head in order to secure the helmet. The body of the helmet is an EPS-injected molded liner with the Giro SL Roll Cage system and a polycarbonate shell. Read More

We're seeing helmets, particularly mountain biking helmets, get a lot longer in the rear over the past few years, and Giro's Featu...re Helmet is no exception. And, while we're inclined to talk about Barry Melrose's hair now, it can only be considered a good thing to have your everyday helmet cover more of your head as you're cruising through the trees. All that extra protection isn't going to do much good if you can't wait to take it off. To that end, Giro included 12 humongous vents to move air in, through, and out of the helmet so your head stays cool, even on low-speed climbs. Additionally, the helmet can be made to fit just right via the In Form one-handed fit adjustment system, which uses a dial at the back to get the tension just right. Read More

The Giro Feature MIPS Mountain Bike Helmet merges enhanced impact protection with low-profile, trail-savvy style. The big story wi...th this helmet is its MIPS or Multi Impact Protection System. Originally developed by Scandinavian neurosurgeons, the MIPS system places a low-friction layer in the helmet to reduce concussion-causing rotational acceleration of the brain resulting from impacts. Ultimately, this means you'll be better equipped to come out unscathed from serious spills when you're pushing your limits on the trail. Giro's In-Mold construction mates a polycarbonate shell with an EPS liner, allowing Giro's designers the opportunity to place better ventilation within the helmet, as evidenced by its 12 vents with internal channeling. Its adjustable moto-style visor keeps the sun from obscuring your vision when you're riding through open areas on bright days. Additionally, you'll find Giro's In-Form fit system for a dialed fit with the simple twist of a dial. Read More
