Richard Sears and Alvah Roebuck founded Sears in 1893. Originally called Sears, Roebuck & Co., it was a mail-order catalog without a bricks-and-mortar store. Sears began opening physical stores in 1925; since then, it has become a multinational department store. Sears was part of
the Dow Jones Industrial Average until Kmart bought the company, forming the Sears Holdings Corporation in 2005. Sears Holdings Corporation is the merged company of Sears and Kmart that operates 4,000 retail locations under both brands and other subsidiaries.
Over the years, the catalog grew as it featured sewing machines, bicycles, sporting goods, automobiles, and other products. Today, Sears offers all types of products, from appliances, lawn equipment, clothes and footwear for the whole family, toys and sporting goods, and much more.
