In 1620, English settlers later known as Pilgrims landed in a world that was new to them and settled in a place they called Plimot...h, in what is now Massachussetts. Native Americans from a group called the Wampanoag, meaning People of the Dawn Land, had fished and hunted this land for thousands of years. Without help from their native neighbours, the English settlers would not have survived their first winter in their new home. As it was, nearly half the colony died. In the at Autumn of 1621 these two groups met for a period of three days as part of a very complicated political situation. Over this period, there was feasting to celebrate the harvest, and the English and natives may have sat down together to share food. This was not a religious occasion; nor was it entirely harmonious, but it grew to be so perceived in later American consciousness. After the Civil War, English descendants looking back on this event romanticised it and created from it the modern holiday we know today as Thanksgiving. In October 2000, Plimoth Plantation with the cooperation of the Wampanoag community reenacted the 1621 harvest festival with careful attention to historical accuracy and with deliberate intent to strip away the myths grown up over the centuries. National Geographic photographer Sisse Brimberg captured the event for 1621 in a series of elegant and artistic photographs that give as close a glimpse of 17-century life as we are likely to have in modern times. Ninety Wampanog Indian men plus additional women and children and Plimoth reenactors representing the 52 English colonists participated in this event, making it an unprecedented cooperative effort on the part of Plimoth and the native community to tell the true story of the first year the colonists lived at Plimoth. Who was the real John Henry? The story of this legendary African-American figure has come down to us in so many songs, stories, an...d plays, that the facts are often lost. Historian Scott Nelson brings John Henry alive for young readers in his personal quest for the true story of the man behind the myth. Nelson presents the famous folk song as a mystery to be unraveled, identifying the embedded clues within the lyrics, which he examines to uncover many surprising truths. He investigates the legend and reveals the real John Henry in this beautifully illustrated book. Nelson?s narrative is multilayered, interweaving the story of the building of the railroads, the period of Reconstruction, folk tales, American mythology, and an exploration of the tradition of work songs and their evolution into blues and rock and roll. This is also the story of the author?s search for the flesh-and-blood man who became an American folk hero; Nelson gives a first-person account of how the historian works, showing history as a process of discovery. Readers rediscover an African-American folk hero. We meet John Henry, the man who worked for the railroad, driving steel spikes. When the railroad threatens to replace workers with a steam-powered hammer, John Henry bets that he can drive the beams into the ground faster than the machine. He wins the contest, but dies in the effort. Nelson?s vibrant text, combined with archival images, brings a new perspective and focus to the life and times of this American legend. Bylines is the latest title from award-winning biographer Sue Macy. Nellie Bly was a pioneering American journalist who lived by t...he belief that Energy rightly applied and directed will accomplish anything. This credo took her from humble origins in Cochran?s Mill, Pennsylvania, a town named after her father, to the most exotic cities around the globe by the time she was 25. Nellie Bly was born Elizabeth Jane Cochran in 1864, in an age when many women led unassuming lives. Her life would make people sit up and take notice: When she wasn?t making history herself, she was writing about others who did. Rarely has anyone left a more detailed record of her place in the world than Nellie Bly. In a very public life, she shared her feelings and opinions through her writing and embraced the struggles of all classes of Americans who were fighting for their rights. The story of the two decades before and after the turn of the 20th century was her story, and she wrote with a powerful pen. Her stunt journalism included getting herself committed to an insane asylum for women and circling the globe in a mere 72 days. She profiled leaders from Susan B. Anthony to Eugene V. Debs, exposed corruption, and offered her readers a travelogue that expanded their horizons, even as it made the world a little smaller. Her words live on even now, and Sue Macy?s masterful biography invites young readers into Nellie Bly?s America, a country at a time of great growth and social change. A World of Colors is an elegant photographic picture book, perfect for young children who are ready to stretch their minds. The bo...ok invites kids into a world where the relationships between colors and their objects are not always as expected, where bananas are not always yellow and where blue and blue and blue may be three different colors. What world is this? It?s the real world. A combination of sumptuous photography and simple, interactive text makes this a perfect lap book to help kids make giant leaps in their observational skills. Readers are asked to find a whole spectrum of colored objects, from the expected?blue sky, green leaves? to the surprising?pink fish, blue feet. Marie Houblon gives preschool readers a grand tour through the colors of their world in lavish spreads that signal the name of the color in large type and show named objects in that color. The following spread challenges the reader to find the same color in photographs from all over the world. Thus, kids are taken on a world tour of orange, for example?observing orange tangerines on an assembly line in Japan, orange eyes in a robot toy in Britain, and orange hair on a little boy in Ireland. When the name for the color and the color itself don?t match, the text is there to ask why we see things in a funny way sometimes?like why we call it red hair. Then, the reader is encouraged to look beyond the book to identify a world of colors in their own surroundings. It shows how a common interest in justice created the convergent path that enabled these young men to meet as Freedom Riders on a bus journey south. No other book on the Freedom Riders has used such a personal perspective. These two young men, empowered by their successes in the Nashville student movement, were among those who volunteered to continue the Freedom Rides after violence in Anniston, Alabama, left the original bus in flames with the riders injured and in retreat.
