Founded in 1932 in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund, Denmark, Lego became widely known after it began making its legendary plastic snap-and-separate bricks in 1958. The Lego Group, which is the world's third largest toy maker, is still owned by the Christiansen fa
mily today, and its products are sold in 130 countries.
Since the 1960s, Lego has manufactured thousands of toy-building bricks and sets of mini figures, featuring an array of favorites stories and characters, such as Star Wars characters, Ninjago, Batman, and Harry Potter.
Popular Lego sets are the Cars 2 and Toy Story kits, based on the Disney Pixar classics; the SpongeBob SquarePants kit, based on the Nickelodeon character; Mindstorms, which lets you build a toy robot; and Duplo, a building toy designed for preschoolers with small hands. Lego also makes video games, robotics, and clothing.
In addition to selling sets that build everything from toy robots to pirates to castles to dinosaurs, the Lego Group operates six Legoland amusement parks.
