176-9007N F40PH Amtrak #396 with Ditch LightsPrototype Information:The EMD F40PH is synonymous with the Amtrak era of American pas...senger trains. Although it has been retired from Amtrak service, it operated for over 20 years and today it continues to be the motive power for commuter railroads such as VRE, MBTA, Caltrain, Metrolink, and Metra) and more all over the United States. Over 400 F40PH locomotives have been manufactured by EMD in various configurations. To support passenger service, the F40PH is equipped with a secondary electrical generator referred to as the head end generator (or HEP, for Head End Power). The need for constant constant frequency power means that these HEP units are constantly running at 900rpm, resulting in the nickname "Screamers" for the units due to the sound.Model Features:All locomotives are equipped with body mounted KATO magnetic knuckle couplers.Locomotives feature directional Golden White LED headlights and illuminated preprinted number boards.Locomotives are equipped with shock absorber construction for smooth and prototypical motion on the track.Locomotives have a powerful five pole motor with all wheel electrical pickup and blackened wheels.Additional alternate snow plow piece included for tight radius operation.New Commuter-version F40PH locomotives have retooled bodies with over-cab A/C units and illuminated ditch lightsDrop in DCC compatible with the Train Control Systems K0D8-C and Digitrax DN163K0D. 176-5401N E5A Chicago Burlington & Quincy #9910A "Silver Speed"The EMD E5 has a distinctive raised angular radiator grill arrangem...ent on the roof that was specific for that locomotive.A special feature of the new Kato EMD E5A is that the front coupler cowling can be removed on both the skirted and un-skirted units in order to mount a Kato magnetic knuckle coupler - this allows modelers to double head these locomotives when pulling longer trains such as the California Zephyr!Another point of interest is that all E5's were custom built with stainless steel corrugated sides so as to match the CB&Q's stainless cars; a feature that gives these locomotives a noticeable shine ! The GG1, one of the PRR's most famous and recognizable locomotives, is also one of the most curiously designed. Technically two lo...comotives under one shell (a "G" class locomotive is a 4-6-0 by PRR specification, therefore the GG1 was two "G" locomotives in a 4-6-0:0-6-4 arrangement) - this added up to a 4.6k horsepower locomotive that was staggeringly powerful, even by today's standards. Designed in the 20's, built in 30's and not retired until the 80's, the GG1 had an incredible lifespan and survives today as a testament to its time in both its unique Loewy-design and overwhelming performance. The Tuscan Red five-stripe paint scheme was, for all intents and purposes, exactly the same as the more common Brunswick green "Modified Loewy" paint scheme, though obviously substituting a car-matching Tuscan red color for the darker Green paint. This paint scheme was introduced in 1952 and in the end was worn by 10 of the GG1s in service on the PRR. Read More
