Diapering Accessories Buying Guide

You’ll change between 7 to 15 diapers a day throughout your child’s first years. Prepare for everyday needs with these diaper necessities.

Types of Diapering Accessories

When it comes to diapering, must-haves include diapers, wipes, and a changing pad (although most diaper bags come standard with one). You may want to add diaper creams and ointments and, if you’re using cloth diapers, a wet bag. Also consider a streamline diaper-changing kit for short trips where you’d prefer not to bring your regular diaper bag.

Diaper-Changing Kits

Ideal for quick trips, these comprise a foldout changing pad with pockets for a baby-wipes case and 1 or 2 diapers.

Diaper-Changing Pads

Diaper-changing pads protect your child’s bottom from unsanitary surfaces; they also protect those surfaces from soiled diapers.

Diapers come in a variety of sizes and specialized types, including preemie, cloth, disposable, overnight, pull-up, swim, and training pants.

Wet Bags

A wet bag is a waterproof sack that holds used cloth diapers until you can launder them.

Product Features

It’s important to consider your baby and lifestyle when looking for your ideal diapering accessories.

Diaper-Changing Kits

Compact and portable, diaper-changing kits usually have a plastic changing pad, a place to hold baby wipes, and room to store 1 or 2 diapers. Some may come with their own refillable baby wipe container. Other models may offer additional storage pockets for baby or parent.

Diaper-Changing Pads

Many diaper bags come with a changing pad. These pads can be loose, attached to the bag, or detachable. All are made of a washable fabric or wipeable material.

Before you buy boxes of diapers, decide which diaper is best for your child’s size and needs. Preemie options fit early arrivers, while reusable cloth diapers come in a variety of styles and thicknesses. Similarly, disposable diapers come in a range of sizes, although you toss them out after one use. Overnight diapers provide more absorbency than a traditional diaper, while pull-ups have elastic on the sides, allowing kids in the midst of toilet training to put them or take them off on their own. Training pants are like a thick pair of underwear: They provide the same look and feel, but have additional absorbency to contain accidents. However, they do not whisk moisture away from the skin, allowing a child to feel wetness -- an important sensation when potty training.

Baby Wipes

Disposable baby wipes come in scented, unscented, sensitive, extra-thick, hypoallergenic, and biodegradable options. Some brands package their baby wipes in plastic dispensers; others come in more portable plastic wrapping. For the eco-conscious, there are also washable and reusable cloth wipes.

Creams & Ointments

Available in various scents and consistencies, diaper creams and ointments provide a physical barrier between Baby’s skin and the diaper’s wetness. This barrier both helps prevent diaper rash and allows it to heal.

Wet Bags

These store wet and soiled cloth diapers until you can get home and wash them.

Purchase Considerations

Some brand of diapers will fit your child’s body better than others, while some babies turn out to be allergic to some scents. The lesson? Be sure to test out any diaper or diapering accessory before you buy it in bulk.

Diaper-Changing Kits

Consider how you’ll use the kit before you buy one. If you plan to throw it in your purse, make sure it folds up small enough to fit. If you’ll be storing it in the bottom of your stroller, choose a kit made of extra-durable material. However, if you plan to carry your diaper bag everywhere you go, you can probably do without a diaper-changing kit.

Diaper-Changing Pads

Before you buy, check if your diaper bag already comes with a changing pad. If not, ensure that the changing pad is easy to clean and folds up to fit in your bag.

Think about your lifestyle and diapering philosophy before you buy. Cloth diapers are a larger upfront investment, but they can last for years. Some cloth diaper retailers sell starter packs that let you try a few different brands before committing to one. There are also websites that resell used cloth diapers in good condition. Disposable diapers are available from major brands like Huggies and Pampers, as well as come in house versions from retailers like Costco and Target. Brands vary in their fit, so if you’re struggling with leaks, give another brand a try.

Baby Wipes

Some formulas may not react well with your baby’s skin. If so, switch to an unscented or sensitive formula. It’s also important to keep baby wipes from drying out. To do so, look for packaging that allows you to securely close the wipes from the air.

Creams & Ointments

It can take some trial-and-error to find the best formulas for your babe. If yours doesn’t seem to be bringing relief, try a different one.

Wet Bag

It’s important to look for a bag with both a waterproof interior (to avoid leaks) and a secure seal (to contain the smell). Also try out the bag at home before you take it on the road.
