This year millions of products for babies and children were recalled. Here we count down the 40 biggest toy recalls of 2011. If you own any of these products, follow the guidelines for return or repair -- and keep this list handy if you are considering purchasing used gear, toys, or clothing for your child.

    The Consumer Product Safety Commission banned drop-side cribs in 2011 following the deaths of 150 babies from 2007 to 2010. This act spurred multiple drop-side recalls from many crib manufacturers after the law took effect. If you have a drop-side crib in your home, don't donate or sell it, instead discard it or request a free hardware kit to immobilize the crib.

    Dorel Juvenile Group Infant, Convertible, and Booster Child Restraint Systems

    The danger: The harness locking and release button does not always return to its locked position. A button that is not in the locked position can allow the harness adjustment strap to slip back through the adjuster as a child moves around in the seat and results in a loose harness. Therefore, the child may not be adequately protected and is at an increased risk for injury if the vehicle they're riding in crashes.

    Rugby Children's Pain & Fever Concentrated Drops

    Date: June 23, 2011

    Company/brand: Rugby Laboratories, Inc.

    The danger: The medication contains acetaminophen, which calls for child-resistant packaging required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. Although the original bottle has child-resistant packaging, a separate dropper unit provided for dispensing the drug to children does not. When in use, a child can access the medicine, posing serious health problems or death if more than the recommended dosage is consumed.

    Burlington Basket Company Bassinets

    The danger: If the cross-bracing rails are not fully locked into position, the bassinets can collapse causing the infant to fall to the floor or fall within the bassinet and suffer injuries.

    Under Armour Defender Football Chin Straps

    Date: November 3, 2011

    Company/brand: Under Armour, Inc.

    The danger: The metal snap that connects the chin strap to the helmet has sharp edges, posing a laceration hazard when the user's metal snap comes into contact with another player.

    LG Electronics Dehumidifiers

    Date: September 14, 2011

    Company/brand: LG Electronics Tianjin Appliance Co.

    The danger: The power connector for the dehumidifier's compressor can short circuit, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers and their property. The dehumidifiers were first recalled in December 2009 following eleven incidents, including four significant fires. Since that time, the company has received sixteen additional incident reports of arcing, smoke, and fire associated with the dehumidifiers, including nine significant fires.

    Target Circo Child Booster Seats

    The danger: The booster seat' straint buckle can open unexpectedly, allowing a child to fall from the chair and be injured.

    Meijer Roman Shades and Roll-Up Blinds

    Date: October 19, 2011

    Company/brand: Meijer

    The danger: Strangulation can occur with the Roman shades when a child places his neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his neck. Strangulation can also occur with the roll-up blinds if the lifting loops slide off the side of the blind and a child's neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop or if a child places his neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.

    Sold at: Discount retailers, dollar stores, flea markets, and other retail liquidators nationwide from March 2010 through September 2011 at various prices. Originally the products were sold at Meijer stores between January 2004 and December 2009 for about $40 before being recalled.

    B.O.B. Single and Double Jogging Strollers

    The danger: A drawstring on the stroller can get wrapped around a child's neck, posing a strangulation hazard.

    B.O.B. Jogging Strollers

    Date: October 11, 2011

    Company/brand: B.O.B. Trailers, Inc.

    The danger: The stroller canopy's embroidered logo's backing patch can detach, posing a choking hazard to babies and young children. B.O.B. has received six reports of children mouthing the detached patch. Gagging and choking were reported in two incidents. The backing was removed from the children's mouth without injury. In each of the reported incidents, the children were seated in an infant car seat attached to the stroller.

    Fisher-Price Little People Builders' Load 'n Go Wagons

    The danger: The back of the wagon's plastic handle has molded-in reinforcement. This design adds stiffness and facilitates children gripping the handle. The handle poses a laceration hazard if a child falls on it.

    The danger: The wooden side rails that run from the headboard to the footboard and hold the bunk bed's mattress in place can split and cause the bunk bed to collapse, posing a fall hazard.

    The danger: Missing or worn clamp pads allow the chairs to detach from a variety of different table surfaces, posing a fall hazard. In addition, when the chair detaches, children's fingers can be caught between the bar and clamping mechanism, posing an amputation hazard. Also, user instructions for the chairs are inadequate, increasing the likelihood of consumer misuse. phil&teds and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have received 19 reports of the chairs falling from different table surfaces, including five reports with injuries. Two reports of injuries involved children's fingers being severely pinched, lacerated, crushed or amputated. The three other reports of injury involved bruising after a chair detached suddenly and a child struck the table or floor.
