Q&A: Lifting Objects Safely

To lift or not to lift? Find out what's the best practice for you and baby during pregnancy.

Q. How can I lift things without hurting my back?

A. Take extra care when you lift heavy objects during pregnancy. (Better yet, get your partner to take over tasks like carrying in the heavy grocery sacks.) To lift, position yourself close to the object that you want to move. Plant your feet shoulder-width apart to give yourself a solid base of support. Now, tighten your abdominal muscles and bend at the knees. Take the object into your arms and lift with your leg muscles as you stand up. Do not bend at your waist. Never lift something heavy or awkwardly shaped without help.
