What's an Ultrasound?

If you're pregnant, chances are you'll have an ultrasound at some point. Read on to learn what ultrasounds are, why they're necessary, and what they feel like.

Ultrasounds are sound-wave pictures that help doctors see internal fetal and maternal structures. The ultrasound probe scans across the mother's abdomen or inside her vagina. The transducer transmits high-frequency sound waves that echo back and are transformed into a picture on a video screen. This picture shows the fetus inside the womb. Often, parents will be given a printout of the ultrasound to keep.

At six weeks' gestation, it's possible to see the baby's heartbeat. For many expectant parents, it's an added bonus that an ultrasound given after 20 weeks can sometimes identify the sex of the baby. However, in some cases it's not possible to see the baby's genitalia and parents are kept guessing.

I'm 4 months pregnant with my first baby. I've had 5 u/s so far as I went through a fertility clinic. I had an u/s weekly from weeks 6-10, and then an emergency one in week 13 to confirm the baby was still ok. I'm scheduled to have my level 2 u/s in a few weeks, and then expect to have 2 more before I deliver.

In Canada, unless you have a problem you get between 3-4 ultrasounds. One at about 10-12 weeks, one at about 20-22 weeks, one at 34 weeks and another closer to the due date to check the baby's positioning. You get a blood test to check for your risk factors for chromosomal disorders like Downs Syndrome @ 12 weeks, and a blood test for Spina Bifida @ 17 weeks.

I am 8 weeks pregnant and I'll only be getting one ultrasound at 20 weeks. Maybe another one around 30 weeks if there is cause for concern, but other than that, the midwives that are caring for me don't believe multiple ultrasounds are that beneficial. Your body will send you signals if there is a problem.

I've just had my 12 week ultrasound and my baby is lying on the back of it's head and neck at the base of my uterus. The doctors have been trying to get the measurements from the back of the neck to screen for chromosonal disorders, but because of it's position they can't get what they need. Babies usually seem to lay on their backs and we are very concerned about this strange positioning. Has anyone else experienced anything like this and is it "normal"?

Hi agnes, I don't think it's nothing to be worried aboout. I've only 1 ultrasound but I get my second one at 20 weeks which is on Sept 7. Im on 4 1/2 months and was told you will feel your baby more at 5 months. My baby doesn/t move that much either but I know it' okay. I heard my baby's heart beat.

You should only be worried if your baby lacks in movement. I went the first three months without prenatal care or ultrasounds and my baby has been strong and healthy all that time. It's just a matter of how you're caring for the baby.

It all depends on your doctor and your risk factors. Some only do one the whole pregnancy, like mine, (unless for some reason they cannot find a heartbeat) other do more.

This is my 3rd pregnancy. With my first 2 pregnancies I had at least 5 u/s with each and this time around I've had an u/s about once a month. They normally only take 10 minutes, just to check and makes sure everything is fine, but I am scheduled this month to have my longer u/s where they will try to determine the sex. I know a lot of moms only get 1 u/s and usually that is based on insurance. Typically insurance will only cover for 1 u/s unless there is a medical emergency.

If you are healthy and not a high risk patient you should get one sonogram at between 12-14 weeks to do a new test out there for Spina Bifida and other deformities it is fairly new. Then at around 20 weeks they do an ultrasound to check the organs and to identify the sex of the baby if you wish.Other than that every visit they listen for the heartbeat and if there are no problems that is all the sonograms you will get unless problems occur.

Only one ultrasound? My doctor does one everytime I go and I am 4 months pregnant. Atleast make sure you do a level two sonogram from a more advanced viewing. The tech will look at the brain, and count fingers and make sure. From a skeletal view everytime is. Good. This will b my sec. Child

no, not really unless u are not feeling the baby as much as u would like. With my first child I had one ultra sound and that was at 14 weeks. All I did at my doctors appt. was hear my baby hear-beat and get my blood pressure checked. I had to learn the sex of my baby at delivery. But as long as everything is going good there is no need to worry.
