Pregnancy Stress

Psychologist Marion Bilich, PhD, answers the question, Will all this worry and stress have any effect on my child?

Question

I am 8 months pregnant and have been very stressed out lately. Will all my worry and stress have any effect on my child? I've heard that a pregnant woman's emotional state can affect her baby in utero.

Answer

It is true that the stress hormones you produce when you're anxious affect the baby to some degree. So it's especially important that you take time to nurture yourself and relax.

You might try deep breathing, listening to soothing music, or meditation. As silly as it sounds, you might try stroking your tummy and talking soothingly to the baby. Doing this can help you calm yourself while connecting you with your child.
