How to Have a Healthy Plus-Size Pregnancy
Pregnancy is not exactly the time to start worrying about your weight. After all, this is a time when you're supposed to gain pounds. But here's the thing: If you're carrying around extra weight before your pregnancy test comes back positive, it's important to know about some health concerns that come with that higher number on the scale. We asked doctors and real women like you how to stay healthy for the entire nine months.
First, the bad news. Being overweight or obese can make you and your baby more susceptible to some health issues. "People don't realize that obesity during pregnancy is a real problem," says Frances Crites, MD, an ob-gyn at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. "Certain health concerns are common with obese or overweight people and may exist from the get-go, or they may get worse or show up in pregnancy because of the extra pressure placed on the body."
