During the second and third trimester, your baby's head may rest heavily on the sciatic nerve in the lower part of the spinal canal. Sciatica, the pain, numbness, and/or tingling you feel as a result, begins deep in the buttocks and radiates down the back of your legs. It can be so intense at times that it incapacitates you. But as the baby shifts position, sciatica will disappears as quickly as it came. It's usually not a cause for concern, though you should tell your healthcare provider about it during your next prenatal visit.
Some women also have a more generalized hip pain, probably due to the softening and shifting of the pelvic bones and the pressure of the heavier uterus. It can make sleeping on your side (usually the preferred sleep position during pregnancy) especially difficult. If that's the case, sleep in whatever position makes you comfortable.

9/19/2011 08:55:35 AM Report AbuseI'm 22 weeks and have had hip pain for months now. Didn't know what was causing it. The only thing that seems to help is sleeping on top of pillows.
5/26/2011 04:39:51 PM Report AbuseI was born with hip dysplasia, and as a result of that basically have no left hip socket so I've had arthritis and hip pain since I was a child, but with each pregnancy it is soooo much worse! The best thing I've found (using 27 years of chronic pain as practice!) is to keep moving! I know when it hurts you really dont want to go for that walk, but if you work out regularly it really does help!

2/24/2011 12:47:18 PM Report Abusemine started last night was cooking and stood for a while. It still hurts now. I'd try druidsoul12's advice and also the heat compress. I pray it works.
1/6/2011 11:26:42 AM Report AbuseI've found a move that helps relieve the hip pain. While standing and holding onto something, lift your leg up off the floor just enough to be clear. Keeping your leg straight, turn your foot/toes from left to right like you would with your hand/wrist if you were opening/closing a door knob. Do it for however long you feel necessary. I've had back and hip issues for years and this move has been helping A LOT lately.
6/8/2010 10:20:42 AM Report AbuseWhat's so mysterious about sciatica is that the pain can come and go as you indicated. The important thing to remember is to find the actual cause of the pain so that it can be correctly treated. Just because the pain temporarily disappears does not mean that it won't reappear...especially without proper treatment.
