Question

What do you think of cord blood donation?

Answer

Cord blood donation is a controversial topic. This process refers to the removal of cord blood at the time of delivery and storing it in case the child may need it in the future for treatment of leukemia, etc. There are doctors who feel that this process has not been totally proven beneficial and it is very expensive.

I have performed about 4,000 deliveries and I believe I've done it three times. There are no risks involved in obtaining the blood. However, it will probably take us a few years of research to find out if this should be the standard. At present it is considered investigational.

I understand you can not donate the cord blood. I was told you have to pay, you can not donate. I think that is terrible, why simply dispose of something soo valuable. I understand it does not cost you to donate bone marrow and that is more painful and less success rate for the receiver.

donating cord blood is a good idea, but if you or your baby ever needs it,you are NOT guaranteed that it will be available for you to use. Umbilical cord blood banking is a way to ensure your baby's blood if they should ever need it. here is a comprehensive article explaining what cord blood can be used for. http://tinyurl.com/25a9cey joyce@mazelabs.com www.mazecordblood.com

Donating cord blood would be just like donating blood at a local blood drive. It's blood that shouldn't be wasted. I think it would be wrong not to donate cord blood. If it could save another baby's life, how could you not do it? I would want someone to do the same for me. And as far as I know, it doesn't cost anything to donate it. So there is no risk to you or your baby.
