How Does the U.S. Compare?

Childbirth is an event that, despite its extraordinary nature, occurs daily throughout the world. But the circumstances under which this miracle occurs vary dramatically, even in places that don't seem that dramatically different. I can personally attest to this: Three years ago my Dutch husband and I moved from Texas to the Netherlands, where I gave birth to our son, Bram. I was surprised by many differences there, and I have friends from other countries with stories just as interesting. So I put together a roundup of birthing practices around the world, based on my own experience and accounts from friends.

Hello, i am a military spouse about to give birth to a baby in 3 weeks, we are stationed in Germany right now. I have an OB/Gyn doctor who overseas my care on the "economy"(that is i see a German male ob/gyn-economy means off base). While it is true that midwives deliver the babys not everyone sees a midwife. I am not looking forward to giving birth in this country as i find the midwives very unflexiable if you want anything but a natural birth. They aren't very agreeable to giving epidurals, and even when they do, it is my understanding that they aren't very powerful. Most women give birth naturally, because the midwives dont see it as very acceptable to use pain medication unless you are having a c-section. I also watched a friend of mine give birth in september, naturally(not planned that way) and she was screaming in pain and the midwife told her to "Shut Up". This will be my third birth, the first two were wonderful virtually pain free experiences in the states. Just thought i would share my experience so far with pre-natal care in Germany!
