In a pregnancy that is progressing normally, your body and your baby's secrete the hormone oxytocin, triggering labor. This starts contractions and preps your cervix by thinning and softening it. Induction is an attempt to jump-start this process.

This site gives very little info about the topics at hand. We need more info to make better decisions about what goes on with us and our unborn babies. Please give more details. Maybe even have a doctor post more info so we can fully understand what is going on. That way we know the best questions to ask our doctors. Not to mention to understand what is being done to us and the risk for us and our child.
5/23/2012 01:08:11 AM Report AbuseIm going to get my membranes stripped next week! Hopefully it will get things going. My due date isnt til the 8th but Im excited to get this over with. Being pregnant in the summer is miserable!

6/21/2011 03:11:34 PM Report AbuseWell I use a midwife and we decided to naturally induce me. She popped open a liquid pill called primrose and rubbed it on my cervix at 10am. I went home. Came back at 2pm and she rubbed some more on my cervix. I left and was supposed to come back at 6pm, but my contractions started at 4pm and my water broke at 5:15pm. By the time I made it to the midwife, it was 5:35 but I was only measuring 4cm dialated. Went to 10 cm in 20 min. He was born at 6pm.

6/1/2011 07:04:47 AM Report Abuseyes i would like a medically explained article of what the heck membrane stripping exactly is and what the procedure consists of. Oh well I guess it's another question for the Doc. I hope my doctoc would never do anything without explaining what he was doing first. That's a pretty important expectation I have with any Doctor ESPECIALLY and OB/GYN.
5/30/2011 06:03:09 PM Report AbuseI am 39 1/2 weeks today and at my check up yesterday and my Dr."stripped my membranes" I started having contrections and they continued all night, we went to the hospital thinking" this was it" to find out i wasnt dialated anymore than in the morning and tday i have no contractions at all ;(
4/15/2011 08:17:35 PM Report AbuseStripping of membranes did not hurt, there was just mild pressure. It lasted maybe all of 5 seconds. Definately not as bad as I anticipated. I would say don't be afraid of having this done.
12/21/2010 07:53:10 PM Report AbuseI am due today but my Dr. stripped my membranes a week ago. Nothing happened all week, I went back to the Dr. today and he did it again. I'm seeing a bit of bloody show, but nothing else yet. We'll see what happens next!
11/16/2010 11:09:30 AM Report AbuseSooo when you get your "membranes stripped" do you go home or are u admitted??
11/14/2010 01:38:39 AM Report AbuseYesterday was my 39 week appointment, my doctor stripped my membranes. Its been about 24 hours now and Im having mild cramping but still nothing. SIGH!
11/11/2010 01:23:18 PM Report Abuseso I had my membranes stripped with my first son, it is not that bad basicly you go into the office and set up for a vag exam!In order there is the cervix then the membranes and then baby...all the due is push around on the membranes and scramble them up to seperate the bag of water! After my membranes were stripped my water broke about 8 hrs later and contractions started 3 hrs afer that...5 more hours and I was holding my angel! The actual stripping is a bit painful but does not take long!!!
10/23/2010 02:37:52 AM Report AbuseI had never heard of stripping the membranes until my sister said the doc did it to her. Basically, the doctor uses one finger, during a pelvic exam, to loosen the amniotic sac from the cervix in a circular motion. (not breaking your water) It's about 2 seconds, but can be VERY painful. My doctor did it without even asking me or explaining what it was! (same doc as my sister) This was on my due date, not even overdue yet. Within an hour I was having contractions.
9/20/2010 03:05:09 PM Report Abuseyes - live up to your headlines or people will block the emails
9/16/2010 11:28:07 AM Report AbuseI too got lost in the sauce. I'm still left with questions about the stripping.. BOOO!
9/10/2010 02:21:38 PM Report AbuseDoes anyone know anything of the membranes being stripped???
8/26/2010 10:42:26 PM Report AbuseNot mentioned at all in the article is the use of a folley bulb (non-medicated method used during induction) or much mention of the use of a combination of methods, or that pitocin induced contractions are generally harder/ stronger than natural ones...
6/20/2010 06:47:28 PM Report AbuseI COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!! This site is somewhat helpful through the course of pregnancy to give you an idea of what baby should be doing and how he's growing at different stages. But as far as clicking on a specific topic that you'd really like answers for, it always seems to redirect you to something that is completely off the subject you were looking for!! VERY VERY frustrating!!!!
6/13/2010 06:39:26 PM Report AbuseI agree with lacarolann... Not sure I would fully say bait and switch, but maybe... I find it hard to find anything that I'm actually looking for and if it exists at all, 1/2 the time I give up, it takes too much time to find. I wanted Facts and Myths to know about Induction and now I'm finding all these other semi-related or completely unrelated things and I can't find the "facts and myths of induction... what I really want to know. Come on folks, get it together!
5/23/2010 03:34:28 PM Report AbuseI was looking for the same info
5/20/2010 11:48:58 AM Report AbuseThe email said, "Will the Dr. need to strip your membranes?" but when I click on the link it takes me to an inducement story that doesn't address the details of membrane stripping. I'm getting tired of these bait and switch emails that don't link to the subject line. Quite annoying.
