Introduction

Each year in the United States, about 150,000 babies are born with birth defects ranging from mild to life threatening. The three leading categories of birth defects are structural/metabolic, congenital infections, and other conditions. While progress has been made in the detection and treatment of birth defects, they remain the leading cause of death in the first year of life. Birth defects are often the result of genetic and environmental factors, but the causes of well over half of all birth defects are currently unknown. The following is a brief sketch of the most commonly noted birth defects.

It was a hard road, but for parents out there in their pregnancy with this diagnosis, I'd like to say, " This is a frightening and challenging road in front of you, with twists and turns you can't expect, but it's leading you somewhere wonderful, to the day when you'll bring your baby home."

My son Aiden who is now 3 mos. was born with a defect called Gastroschisis, where for some reason in pregnancy during formation of the abdomen, a hole is left a portion of the bowels, and sometimes other organs, is on the outside of the body, floating in the Amniotic fluid. He had surgery when he was just a few hours old to put the intestines back inside and close the hole, after that he spent 54 days in the hospital.

My son now 10 was born with clubfoot on only one foot - we even saw it on the ultra sound scans before birth - he was casted for 12 weeks - w/new casts every week, then the orthodic brace which he still wears to-date. He had surgery to elongate his achilles tendon at age 4 even though we religiously followed Ponseti. Sometimes it can not be avoided.

Clubfoot is best treated using the Ponseti method of clubfoot correction. The castings do not take 3-6 months, but 3-9 weeks. After casting, the child wears a clubfoot brace starting at 23 hours a day and gradually reducing the hours to 12 a day until the child is around 5 years old. Most clubfoot surgery can be avoided if this method is applied correctly.
