Calcium is one of the major building blocks of bone and teeth. It also contributes to the development of the baby's circulatory system, nervous system, and muscles. Your body needs an ample supply of calcium to help build your baby. If it can't get enough from your diet, it will take calcium from your bones, weakening them and increasing your chance of osteoporosis later in life. Dairy foods are the best source of calcium. Aim to get 3 servings of low-fat or non-fat milk or yogurt each day. If you can't tolerate dairy, use a calcium-fortified equivalent, such as soymilk.
