Cereal Swap

Cereal Swap
Dasha Wright Ewing

Q: My child likes only kiddie cereal. How can I make her breakfast more nutritious?

A: Here are some strategies to try:

Spark creativity. Tell your child that it's her job to design and taste-test a new cereal for the family's breakfast. Let her choose from some kid-friendly but low-sugar options that have at least a few grams of fiber per serving, like Cheerios, Life, and Wheaties. Then ask her to add the kind of fruit and milk (strawberry, white, or chocolate) she likes best.

Meet her halfway. Mix her favorite brand 50-50 with a low-sugar, whole-grain type like one of those listed above. Then gradually increase the amount of the whole-grain cereal and reduce the kiddie kind until you reach an 80-20 mix.
