Pregnancy Health: Work Safety

Question

Can working in front of a computer monitor harm my developing baby? Are there any other typical office hazards I should be aware of throughout my pregnancy?

Answer

There is no research to show that working in front of a computer terminal is harmful to the fetus. Jobs where the patient is exposed to strong chemicals should be avoided, or the situation should at least be discussed with your doctor. One study showed an increased risk of miscarriage with female anesthesiologists administering general anesthesia. Other studies have supported the theory of an increased risk of preterm delivery in women who work on their feet constantly. Therefore I recommend frequent breaks for women who have this type of job (waitresses, nurses, doctors).
