Shoe In

Follow these tips for finding the right walking shoe.
Shoe In

The key to feeling great throughout your walk is finding a shoe that fits right. For lacing up in the perfect sneaker, follow these five rules from Stephen M. Pribut, DPM, a podiatrist in Washington, D.C.

  1. Have your feet measured each time you buy a new pair of shoes. Your size changes as you age.
  2. Stick with a shoe designed specifically for either walking or running. You can find a good sneaker for less than $100.
  3. For each pair you try on, walk briskly in the store for 10 minutes to be sure they're comfortable.
  4. Bring the same socks you will wear for your walking workouts to the store for trying on new sneaks. And remember that most people typically need sneakers a half-size bigger than their dress shoes.
  5. If you have a low arch, look for a stability shoe that helps control how your foot lands. High arches call for more shock absorption -- and require a more cushioned shoe.
