For stressed-out parents, giving up smoking can seem particularly tough -- but it's also especially beneficial. "Quitting is as important for your family's health as buckling your child into his car seat," says Susanne Tanski, MD, a smoking researcher and assistant professor of pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School, in Hanover, New Hampshire. "You wouldn't dream of not strapping him in, even though the odds of being in an accident are actually very low. The odds of getting lung damage from secondhand smoke are much higher."
