On the reality-TV show Jersey Shore, the acronym GTL meant "gym, tan, and laundry." But these days, new mom Snooki has a different focus and routine in life.
You may know Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi as the party girl with the high bouffant from Jersey Shore. But instead of spending days and nights drinking and dancing with her former housemates, Polizzi is now focused on being a doting mom to her 8-month-old son, Lorenzo, with fiancé Jionni LaValle. Since Lorenzo was born on August 26, 2012, Polizzi's world has become full of lullabies and diapers. Parents.com recently connected with Polizzi to discuss how motherhood has changed her and what she's learned about being a parent.
How would you describe motherhood?
Phenomenal! It is the best thing ever. I feel like I have a new best friend, and when I look at Lorenzo I think he is just so cute.
Many people remember your wild and crazy ways on Jersey Shore. Talk about the transition from party girl to mommy. How has Lorenzo changed you?
On Jersey Shore I was in my early twenties. I describe that period as being in my college years. The only thing I was thinking about was living it up and having fun. Once I met Jionni, I started to calm down. However, when I got pregnant, I knew things were going to be different. I was terrified. I was never really good with kids, and at one point, I didn't even like kids. When Lorenzo arrived, my whole life completely changed. Everything came naturally and was so beautiful. I found myself not wanting to go out and just wanting to be with him all the time. Lorenzo has made me more mature and more responsible, and he made me grow up.
What are some of your go-to resources for information when you have questions about caring for a baby? Which ones did you find the most helpful?
A lot came naturally. If Lorenzo gets sick, I call the doctor or one of Jionni's siblings because they all have kids. I did research to answer questions I had when I was pregnant. Instead of relying on the usual books everyone reads, I found pregnancy apps that were full of great information I found to be relatable. My favorites were What To Expect Pregnancy and BabyCenter's My Baby Today and My Pregnancy Today.
What has been the biggest obstacle during your first year with Lorenzo?
Sleeping. Lorenzo does not sleep through the night because he's teething. [He's] been waking up every two hours. Sometimes I pick him up and hold him, which helps him fall back asleep, or I give him a bottle. We've also bought a variety of teething toys and given him a spoonful of cold applesauce for his gums.
What will you teach your son about good nutrition and exercise as he gets older?
I feel like he's going to be into sports because Jionni played a lot of sports. In terms of making good food choices, when you lead a healthy lifestyle, you feel good and so much better about yourself. I will show him that making smart choices gives you more energy and makes you happier.
What activities do you and Jionni like to do to bond with your son?
We always take him for a walk together or push him on his new swing. I can tell that Lorenzo loves alone time with his daddy. It's like Lorenzo gets that he and Daddy are both guys and have a special connection. When he's with me, Lorenzo loves to be held and cuddled.
Does Lorenzo have a favorite book that you read to him? Does he have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal?
His favorite [book] is Simple First Words: Let's Talk, by Roger Priddy. Lorenzo loves to push the buttons and hear all of the different sounds. He has a favorite pacifier that has a small stuffed animal attached to it. He also has the Baby Einstein lion that makes music when you squeeze it.
You're entering the baby business world by writing a book. Tell me about that.
I'm writing [about my] experience being pregnant. I just wrote a chapter that centered on creating a baby registry. It was so overwhelming because there were so many baby products to choose from, but the Boppy Newborn Lounger, the Baby Einstein Activity Gym, and the Fisher-Price Cradle Swing are on my must-have list. [My book] will hit shelves in January 2014. In addition to the book, I created a line of baby sunglasses and a collection of baby slippers.
On the topic of great parenting tips, who gave you the best advice?
I don't tend to take advice very well. Although parenting can be hard and stressful at times, I feel like I have to go through everything and experience it myself.
How do you juggle a busy career, a relationship, and motherhood?
Because Lorenzo is such a good baby, I don't feel overwhelmed. When you have a good baby it makes getting things done so much easier.
