Question

Isn't anger part of the cycle of grief? How can adults help their children (and themselves) move beyond anger?

Answer

Anger is a normal and important part of grief, but we need to help focus it in appropriate ways. At my kids' school, all the students and faculty are getting together every day to sing "Let There Be Peace on Earth." It's been a very powerful experience and has helped them find something more important than anger to focus on.

Find ways to move past the angry feelings as a family. Sharing positive stories, lighting a candle of remembrance together each night, or writing letters to military personnel can help -- so can shedding tears and laughing. Talk about your feelings and encourage your older children to do the same. Use these tragic events as an opportunity to learn and grow together.
