Checklist: What to Consider When Given Unwelcome Parenting Advice

When a stranger, relative, or other mommy friend offers you parenting pointers, remember this: Your strengths as a mother will be different from anyone else's. Keep these ideas in mind when considering their advice.

___ Recognize there are pros and cons to every approach or method.

___ Realize that trends -- even in parenting -- change.

___ Speak up if a situation or person makes you uncomfortable.

___ Consider the source carefully.

___ Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

___ Don't be afraid to say no if you don't.

___ Tuck the information in your back pocket. You never know when it might come in handy.
