Weather Report: Prepare Your Family for a Disaster

Plan for emergencies with these safety tips for your home and family -- pets too.
Emergency Awareness

Last year the United States was hit by more than 75 weather-related disasters, including Hurricane Ike, flooding in Texas, and wildfires throughout California. And scientists predict even more dangerous weather in years to come. To protect your family, have a plan in place before the forecast becomes dire.

  • Gather supplies in a backpack or duffel bag and store in an accessible location near your exit route, like the garage, kitchen pantry, or a closet by the front door. Replace the food and water every six months. Once a year update the kit with prescription meds to accommodate changing health needs, and replace expired over-the-counter drugs.
  • In your car store food, water, first-aid supplies, flares, jumper cables, and seasonal items like jackets and blankets (in case you're stranded). As soon as you hear of an evacuation warning, fill up your gas tank to beat the crowds.
  • There's a chance your family won't be together when disaster strikes, so decide on a meeting place other than your home. Pick one spot in your neighborhood and another that is farther away; gather at the second site if local streets are closed. And choose an out-of-state relative or friend as the point person if your family is separated or unable to get in touch.
