Separation Tummy Aches

If your child gets tummyaches when she's alone -- and doesn't have a medical problem -- she's likely experiencing separation anxiety. We tell you how to calm her fears.

Q: The doctor can't find anything wrong, so why does my daughter get a stomachache every time she goes to her new dance class?

A: Your daughter's stomachaches may be a symptom of separation anxiety, says Lynne Freeman, Ph.D., Sherman Oaks, California-based author of Panic Free. You were wise to rule out any medical problems first. Next, explains Dr. Freeman, get your child to talk about what's making her anxious. Ask her, "How do you feel when you leave me to go to your new class?" If your daughter admits that she's fearful, validate her feelings: "I know. When I was your age, I was a little worried about leaving my mom behind and meeting a new group of kids. But I bet that if you keep going, you'll really start to like it!"

Finally, teach your daughter how to approach new friends by saying: "Hi, I'm Kate. Do you want to practice with me?" Having buddies your child looks forward to seeing will make it easier for her to separate.
