Big Sister Holding Baby on Mom's Lap

Whether we're moms, daughters, grandmothers, or all of the above, Mother's Day holds a special place in our hearts. Sure, birthdays are a chance to show our appreciation, but Mother's Day is something different altogether. It's about loving mom for mothering us. It's about loving mom for disciplining us, pushing us, and loving us. It's about loving your children because they are yours. It's about celebrating the very idea of motherhood. In honor of that, we've compiled some comments from our community -- their favorite memories of Mother's Days past and present. Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day Baby

I gave birth to my daughter on Mother's Day. My due date was May 23, but for my entire pregnancy my own mother told me I was having a Mother's Day baby. Around 11:30 p.m. the night before my water broke. My husband and I checked in to the hospital at 12:01 a.m. on Mother's Day. My beautiful baby girl entered the world at 2:51 p.m. on Mother's Day, May 12, 2002. She was 7 pounds, 3 ounces, 19 3/4 inches long, with a full head of dark hair. Mother knows best -- chalk one up for my mom. And what a gift to give her, her first granddaughter -- on Mother's Day. --Gracie'sMom

Stomach Aches and Pearls

On Mother's Day my husband woke me up early in the morning, complaining of stomach aches. He said he wanted some warm milk to calm his stomach. Being the lovely wife I am, I proceeded down the stairs and noticed a black box. In it was a pearl necklace, earrings, and bracelet. I was so excited. A few steps down was a Mother's Day card. And a few steps further down was a pair of car keys. I went into the garage and saw a new pearl 2003 Kia Optima! --Anonymous

Finger Paints and Poems

My favorite Mother's Day memory was of my very first Mother's Day as a new mom. I came home from work and my mom was standing in the doorway smiling. She was holding my 9-month-old son. He handed me a card that my mom had picked out. It had bunnies on the front, and on the inside was this beautiful poem, "Cuddle Time with Mommy." Also my son's handprints were on the insert. It was my first and best Mother's Day present ever! --DoodleBugzMama

The Gift of Gab

My favorite Mother's Day was my first. We went out to eat and the restaurant was giving all the mothers a rose. When we got home it was time for my daughter's feeding. She was sitting in my lap and we were playing. Then, out of nowhere see says her first words, "Mamma Dadda Babba." I just repeated, "Ohmigod! Ohmigod! She said her first words and on Mother's Day!" At least "Mamma" came out first. --hopeful4u_lil1

Otherwise Engaged

My first Mother's Day was nice, but my second was wonderful! I don't have a real engagement ring, and technically my husband didn't really propose; it's a long story. But anyway, on my second Mother's Day we took our son to the grandparents. (We have a mommy breakfast out.) Then hubby said that we left something at home. Being a super mom (like we all are) I said "No way. I remembered everything." But he gave me a look and off we went. We got home and I said, "Okay, what do we need?" Then, in the middle of the living room, he got down on one knee and told me how much he loved me and what a great mother I was. And then he pulled out a ring! A silver band with a row of diamonds going halfway around it! I cried and cried and he smiled and said he was hoping for that reaction. When we got back to our son, my mother-in-law admitted she was in on the whole thing. To top it off we had a super Mother's Day breakfast in a restaurant in which Dad and Grandpa fed the baby while my mom-in-law and I pigged out! It was great! --adrianeduquenne
