All the Trimmings

Here's a fun idea for a playdate: Invite your child's best friends over to spend an afternoon making festive ornaments. All you need are basic supplies, fun snacks, and holiday music to play while they create. Turn the page for three simple-but-special decorations.

Mod Snowflakes


What you need: Wood shapes, craft sticks, and ice-cream spoons in various sizes; wood glue; acrylic paint; paintbrush; glitter; craft glue; string, yarn, or ribbon for hanging.

How to: Arrange and layer wooden shapes, sticks, and spoons in a snowflake design. Use wood glue to attach pieces; let dry. Paint as desired. To finish, embellish with glitter, and glue on a loop of string to hang.

What you need: Empty plastic thread spools; scissors; ribbon scraps; craft glue; chenille stems.

How to: Layer and glue ribbon scraps onto body of spool. Loop chenille stem in half, and insert both ends through holes of spool from top to bottom. Coil ends of chenille stems around bottom hole of spool to secure.

What you need: Star-shaped papier-mache ornaments; acrylic paint; paintbrush; craft glue; buttons (in assorted shapes, colors, and sizes).

How to: Paint star ornament in one coat of acrylic paint and let dry. Using craft glue, attach buttons to ornament until the entire surface is covered. Lay flat to dry.
