Low-Weight Women

Dr. Elizabeth Pryor answers the question, Can underweight women have healthy pregnancies?

Question

I am 5 feet 6 inches and only weigh 100 pounds. Will this be a problem if I become pregnant? I do have normal periods.

Answer

Thin women may miss their periods due to a lack of body fat, or for some other reason entirely. Since you are having normal periods, there is no reason to think that you would have difficulty conceiving.

However, research has shown that women who are thin have an increased risk for small babies/preterm labor. Therefore, when you get pregnant, it is very important that your doctor follow your diet/weight gain. With good diet and weight gain, you should do very well.
