Alternatives for kids who hate sports.

Does your child have an aversion to competitive sports? You can still find physical activities to keep her fit and healthy. Here are some suggestions for keeping your child active in ways that are a good match for her.

1. Find out why she doesn't like competitive games. Is it possible that her dislike of sports comes from fear of failure rather than disinterest? Before ruling out sports leagues, consider the following possible explanations:

  • Fear of injury
  • Self-consciousness/self-esteem
  • Fear of failure or embarrassment
  • Desire to not let anyone down

I agree... My husband took martial arts for a few years, then had to quit because he wasn't able to do the major sparring that comes with advancing in belts. He took tae kwon do, and couldn't do spinning kicks without falling over due to inner ear issues. And my daughter's casual dance school has a number of girls who dance competitively. It isn't by any means mandatory, but there are enough students who do that the school owner offers classes specifically for the competition groups.

I think that parents need to be careful if they select certain activities on the "noncompetitive" list. Horse riding and some of the other sports listed can be highly competitive. I am a riding instructor and have several students who were dropped by instructors because they wouldn't compete. I also know several people who quit riding all together because they wouldn't compete. To label it as uncompetitive is far from the truth.
