When your family gathers around the TV to watch America's favorite sports event, there are lots of fun, nutritious options you can enjoy instead of unhealthy snacks, says Chris Rosenbloom, Ph.D., nutrition consultant for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association in Atlanta. Try these top-scoring tailgate ideas:
- Kick things off by seasoning light cream cheese spread with a pinch of dry ranch dressing mix. Shape it into sports balls and refrigerate to thicken. Serve with veggies for dipping.
- Add protein and fiber to the festivities by serving chili made with ground turkey breast and crusty whole grain bread.
- For a side dish, slice a baked potato in half lengthwise and scoop out most of the filling. Mash the potato with diced pepper and place the mix in one of the halves. Bake the stuffed halves for 20-25 minutes at 400?F. Use cheese to make football seams.
- For dessert, bake oatmeal cookies shaped like footballs. Let your child use raisins to form the seams.
