In the planning stages of the shower, be sure to discuss possible game ideas with the mom-to-be. She may have some definite likes and dislikes when it comes to party games, and since it's her day, you want to be sure to plan something she'll enjoy. Also, keep in mind her physical status: this is no time for a game of Twister.

Often, the guest list will include a combination of friends and relatives of the mom-to-be, and they may not know one another. By scheduling a fun game, you can be sure to break the ice and encourage the guests to mix. Look for "mind" games and popular themes that will cross any generational boundaries and engage the entire group.

Consider these guidelines:

• Plan the game for early in the party. It makes a great icebreaker, so try to schedule it for after the initial arrival phase, but before everyone gets distracted with the main food courses and gift opening.

• Pick a game connected to your theme. Whatever your decorating and food plans, you can tie it all together with a well-chosen game in the same theme.

• Prepare your props in advance. If your game requires writing, be sure you've gathered up enough pens and pencils beforehand. And the same thing goes for other objects: have it all ready to go so there's no waiting around.

• Think cruise director. If you're enthusiastic about your game, your guests will catch your mood.

• Choose creative but inexpensive prizes. The fun of the game should be in the playing, but it's nice to have a prize. If you've got a party and game theme, the prize may be obvious, such as a CD for a game that involves music or a tabletop item for a food-related game. Check out crafts fairs and other unusual spots for unique prize ideas.

• Take pictures during the game. They make great additions to a mom's scrapbook.

• Avoid games that are too complicated. Games should be easy to explain and a snap to play. Anything confusing or labor-intensive takes all the fun out of it.
