If you have trouble sitting still, that's good news because fidgeting burns calories. "Stand whenever you have the chance, and by all means squirm, fiddle, twitch, and jiggle," suggests Jennifer Ackerman, author of Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream: A Day in the Life of Your Body (Houghton Mifflin). Studies have shown that small physical activities, even just shifting positions, can help you lose weight. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that lean people (who don't exercise) move around two and a half more hours a day than overweight individuals. The extra motion burns off 350 additional daily calories (enough to lose 30 to 40 pounds in a year). So go ahead, tap your toes and drum your fingertips -- every little bit helps.
