Pre term labor / pregnancy complications

Had anyone had any complications ? I am 30 weeks along and I am 2.5 cm dialated and 90 percent effaced ... I am one bed rest and a bunch if medication to try to keep my little girl in. I am wondering if anyone has had similar problems and what your doctor has done to help .. I am not confident in my doctor and will never go to him after this pregnancy. Is it still possible for me to change doctors and should I be seeing a neonatologist ? Any comment or suggestions will help thanks!

Re: Pre term labor / pregnancy complications

Hi Haleyann5. I am 29.5 weeks along and I was worried that I was in preterm labor too. My doctor told me she thinks I am having Braxton Hicks and not preterm labor, but I am still worried. My contractions seem to last all day long, although they are not painful. My OB said if I were in preterm labor that she would recommend bed rest and give me a betamethasone shot to help my baby's lungs mature. Did your doctor mention betamethasone for you?  My OB said that most babies that are born preterm do very well if they make it to week 34, so I hope you can hang in there for 4 more weeks. If you are uncomfortable with your OB's recommendations you should ask for a second opinion. Ask around for recommendations of OBs from your friends and check doctor credentials on the CA Medical Board's website. http://www2.dca.ca.gov  You can check the year they were licensed, and the medical school where they graduated. Good luck

Re: Pre term labor / pregnancy complications

Hi Haleyann5. I am glad to hear your contractions have stopped and that your doctor has given you the steroid shots, and the other medications to stop the contractions. I understand your feelings about wanting to see an OB with lots of experience with high risk pregnancies. How about asking your OB directly how much experience he/she has with high risk pregnancies such as yours? Your OB may frankly tell you that he or she does not have much experience in high risk pregnancies, in which case you are justified in asking for a referral to a more experienced collegue. Or your OB may tell you he/she is very experienced and you will feel better. You can also call your primary care physician's office and ask for a referral to a well-known OB in the area, explaining your situation. Doctors usually know which doctor are reputable. Many OB's are a prt of large medical groups which have websites which list their biographies/credentials and experience. If you have any friends that are in health care, they might be able to point to you a good OB medical group in your area. I live in Orange County, CA, if you are nearby then I would be happy to give you my OB's name.

Re: Pre term labor / pregnancy complications

I live in Utah ! I just kinda feel intimidated by my obgyn and his nurses ... I am in Medicaid and I feel like they treat me differently ... I am also a teen mom . I am 17 and so I feel like they kinda are biased ... An kinda judgemental ... He is a good doctor I think I just feel kinda weird towards his whole office ...

Re: Pre term labor / pregnancy complications

Hi Haleyann5

I can imagine this must be so hard for you. I am sorry to hear you feel that the doctor and his staff treat you differently because you are young. Hang in there and be strong! I would imagine that a doctor will do the best he can for his patient, regardless of his personal views, especially since you are 7 months pregnant. Your baby is old enough that he or she will most likely survive even if born now, but the question is how healthy will he/she be. The sooner he/she  is born there is higher chance of having severe health problems. I imagine any doctor will do his very best to make sure you get the best care, so that the baby will be born as healthy as possible. So, as long as you have confidence in his medical ability, I think you can trust that he will do the best he can for you and your baby. This is all my personal opinion of course. Good luck to you!
