I am so saddened to hear about all of the cases of children being left in hot cars. What are your thoughts on this? Some cases seem purely accidental yet there are a few recently that seem intentional. Either way, it's awful. What are your thoughts?
~ Christine ~ Mom to a sweet little girl and 2 busy boys
I live in FL and every summer we hear so many of these stories, it is just awful. We had 2 that happened recently, in my own city. They were both with older children, one where the mom left the child while she shopped b/c the child said she didn't want to go inside. But the mom barely left the window cracked and was in the store a lot longer than she anticipated. Plus, hello, aren't you worried about your kid getting kidnapped or getting out of the car and then getting hit by a car in the parking lot?
The other was a kid who barely spoke English whose dad left him in car while he worked cleaning restrooms or something in a store. The dad was an immigrant and parked the car in the shade and left the windows down half-way, so he thought it was fine. The store manager said the child could have waited inside while dad worked.
I know when my kids were babies, sometimes they would fall asleep and I would be on auto-pilot and for a split second it was almost as if my child wasn't in the car. But I never actually forgot they were there. I know it can happen to good parents, completely disctracted, but good parents. I hate that it happens and I don't know how I would even live with myself if that happened. But I have never been afraid it would happen. I am more fearful of things like traffic accidents, ocean currents, falling down stairs, losing a kid in store, that sort of thing.
