Meet Leticia: A Tech Savvy Parent
4 years ago I started writing about technology because I had questions about bringing it into our home for our children. I spent years teaching teachers how to integrate technology into their classrooms to enhance curriculum, select quality resources to use with their kids, and evaluated hardware and software that we purchased as one of the largest school systems in the country. This was my career and with my mother-in-law’s offer to give us her hand me down computer for the kids, it was time to put everything I had learned and taught into action for my own family.
On one hand, my husband and I were very excited about the computer because of the interactive educational content our then 4 year old daughter could use to further her learning but at the same time, we had concerns.
Where would we put it so it didn’t interfere with creative play? What games, software, or websites should she be allowed to play? How would I limit screen time to ensure that there was plenty of other creative play going on to balance out the use of the computer. How do you distinguish the good content from the bad?
I started writing what I knew about on TechSavvyMama.com and the products and websites I loved based on personal experiences with my own kids. Along the way, I found I was providing practical knowledge for families to empower them to make their own decisions about technology in their homes while helping them to keep up with an ever-changing landscape full of new devices, apps, and safety issues regarding their use.
That 4 year old preschooler is now a second grader and the technology is changing as fast as she’s growing. It’s a huge part of our lives. It may be always changing but it is not going away. Helping parents navigate this complicated landscape is what I’ve set out to do both on my own site and through the brand new Tech Savvy Parents here on Parents.com.
I look forward to sharing the best websites, apps, and devices I find that are not only fun, and educational but also serve as time savers for busy parents. I’m also here to provide food for thought as you incorporate technology into your homes for you and your children and am happy to address any tech related topics that come up in your home.
